Thioredoxin in Post-Injury Sepsis And Ards

چکیده
Introduction Trauma is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, resulting in a great global burden of disability and mortality [1,2]. Approximately half of all trauma deaths occur during the first hours due to traumatic brain injury or massive bleeding. Later deaths are due to, for example, sepsis or multiple organ failure [3]. Independent risk factors for post-injury sepsis are still somewhat poorly defined. Injury Severity Score (ISS), male gender, age, low Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) and massive blood transfusion have been suggested as risk factors [4]. Thioredoxin (TRX) is thought to have important antioxidant properties but it also functions as an endogenous anti-inflammatory mediator [5]. The link between high plasma levels of TRX and sepsis has been studied previously, although with conflicting evidence [5,6]. TRX-levels in trauma patients and the possible correlation to secondary complications such as post-injury sepsis and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) have to our knowledge not been studied previously.

Low tidal volume pressure support versus controlled ventilation in early experimental sepsis in pigs
BACKGROUND In moderate acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) several studies support the usage of assisted spontaneous breathing modes. Only limited data, however, focus on the application in systemic sepsis and developing lung injury. The present study examines the effects of immediate initiation of pressure support ventilation (PSV) in a model of sepsis-induced ARDS. METHODS 18 anesthe...
متن کاملAnti-Inflammatory Mechanisms of Apolipoprotein A-I Mimetic Peptide in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Secondary to Sepsis
Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) due to sepsis has a high mortality rate with limited treatment options. High density lipoprotein (HDL) exerts innate protective effects in systemic inflammation. However, its role in ARDS has not been well studied. Peptides such as L-4F mimic the secondary structural features and functions of apolipoprotein (apo)A-I, the major protein component of HDL....
متن کاملUrine hydrogen peroxide during adult respiratory distress syndrome in patients with and without sepsis.
BACKGROUND The lung injury in adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) has been associated with increased expiratory hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentrations. Furthermore, patients with sepsis and ARDS are reported to have greater serum scavenging of H2O2 than patients with ARDS only. We hypothesized that the systemic presence of H2O2 would be detectable in the urine of these two groups of pat...
متن کاملIntravenous vitamin C as adjunctive therapy for enterovirus/rhinovirus induced acute respiratory distress syndrome
We report a case of virus-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) treated with parenteral vitamin C in a patient testing positive for enterovirus/rhinovirus on viral screening. This report outlines the first use of high dose intravenous vitamin C as an interventional therapy for ARDS, resulting from enterovirus/rhinovirus respiratory infection. From very significant preclinical resea...
متن کاملBiomarkers of lung epithelial injury and inflammation distinguish severe sepsis patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome
INTRODUCTION Despite recent modifications, the clinical definition of the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remains non-specific, leading to under-diagnosis and under-treatment. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that a biomarker panel would be useful for biologic confirmation of the clinical diagnosis of ARDS in patients at risk of developing ARDS due to severe sepsis. M...
